Kurt Cobain declared, “I’m the first to admit Nirvana are the 90s Cheap Trick,” while Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan made onstage cameos at Trick gigs and invited them to open for the Pumpkins.Įlsewhere, they’ve had props from US punks Green Day, power-poppers Weezer and Fountains Of Wayne, funk-metallers Red Hot Chili Peppers, and hardcore types Big Black, who cut a version of He’s A Whore in 1986. The grungers – Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden – name-checked them at every opportunity. Thrash? Anthrax covered two their Big Eyes and Auf Wiedersehen.
Hair metal? They’re cited as an influence by Poison, Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses. They’re the musicians’ musicians, loved by bands from every genre. And the band was ranked No 25 in VH1 TV’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists Of Hard Rock. In 2007, their home state designated 1 April Cheap Trick Day.

F orty years after signing to Epic, Cheap Trick, heavenly purveyors of hook-heavy hard rock, famous for perfect pop-metal confections such as Surrender, I Want You To Want Me and So Good To See You, and immaculate albums In Color, Heaven Tonight And Dream Police, finally have an official seal of approval: on 8 April, they were inducted into the US Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
